Clydesdales Reunion

No doubt many will remember those cold winter afternoons up at the Athletic Oval in 1979 and 1984 when the giant killing Toowoomba Clydesdales beat touring Great Britain teams, maintaining Toowoomba’s reputation as a bit of a graveyard for visiting rugby league teams.

1988 saw the last ever extended tour of Australia by a Great Britain team which avenged the losses by their predecessors.

Some great names appear on the team lists for these 3 games including future State of Origin players Alan Smith, Rohan Hancock, Dan Stains, Mark Hohn and Terry Cook, as well as Queensland and Australian representative Greg Platz and local legends such as Gary Sutton, Peter Connell and Ricky Weribone.  The feats of these 3 Clydesdales teams will be relived at the upcoming Clydesdales Reunion Weekend on 20 & 21 November.

Events planned include a golf day at the Toowoomba Golf Club, Middle Ridge for members of the 1979, 1984 and 1988 teams (wives/partners are most welcome) on Friday, 20 November (cost $50).  Contact Col Lindenberg to book a spot.  Following the golf will be the Men of League Kick Off Club that evening from 6.30pm at the refurbished Toowoomba Sports Club.

The Kick Off Club function is open to everyone but numbers will be limited due to COVID-19 restrictions.  The teams and their wives/partners will then enjoy an afternoon/evening at the races on Saturday, 21 November in “The Winning Post” at beautiful Clifford Park.  Cost is $35 which includes admission to the races and a meal.  Tickets for this event must be purchased and paid for in advance so contact Dan Stains now.

Should be a great weekend!
