NEWTOWN v ROSEWOOD

Newtown travelled down to Rosewood to take on the Rosewood Roosters last night in their annual pre-season trial game. The night began with a tough game of Reggies between the 2 clubs. Newtown bolstered by good numbers came away with a strong victory. Mak Suey was again a stand out with strong defence in the middle and some smart dummy half runs. Trent Hill directed the team around the park and had some decisive runs. Out wide Dylan Glossop was dangerous in attack & strong in his edge defence.
Well done boys!
The rain affected A grade game delivered a series of incomplete sets causing the Newtown side to defend its line time & time again.
The Rosewood Roosters were first to score after some good build up sets due to their ball security in the wet weather.
With 30 seconds to go in the half, Newtown 5/8 Lachlan Watt skipped through the defensive line to roll the team 80m up the field. After 2 more hit ups Lachlan again identified a short side to put winger Stephen Washington over in the corner. Converting the try from the sideline, scores were even at half time.
Unfortunately an incident involving 2 players resulted in a Newtown player being sent off just after half time.
With a renewed focus on completing sets in the 2nd half, Newtown were able to play a better brand of footy! To Rosewoods credit they repelled Newtown’s attack, until Lachlan Watt took the defensive line on 20 metres out, beating 5 players to score under the posts. The final score being Newtown 12 & Rosewood 6.
Front rower Preston Mcillrick carted the ball forward all game and worked tirelessly in defence with no break. Steven Mitchell was a force with ball in hand and folded a few in defence. Out wide big Junior was again dynamic, making in roads for the team to follow.
Thanks to Joe, Mak, Preston, & Cooper for backing up….much appreciated.
I’d like to wish Rosewood all the best for the coming season and thanks for your hospitality.

AUSTIN OUT FOR YEAR

In very disappointing news for Austin Rooster Jennings and the Wattles Warriors, we can confirm that Austin suffered a tear to his ACL last weekend, which will see him sit out the 2024 season.
We wish Austin a speedy recovery and can’t wait to see him back on the footy field next season
NEWTOWN v CABOOLTURE TRIAL MATCH
Newtown played its first trial game against the Caboolture Snakes. A great club that plays in the Sunny Coast A grade comp. With links to the falcons. They are a very well drilled and structured outfit.
Our reggies started the afternoon with a hard fought loss. With only 4 on the bench against a squad of 28 the day was always going to be tough. Mak Suey worked hard around the ruck and defended tirelessly. Big Joey Reis had a few bullocking runs and damaging defensive moments. Trent Hill directed the boys well and his kicking game was on point. Great effort boys. U did us proud.
RIley Halpin has been appointed A Grade captain. He has stuck with club through tough times. His loyalty has never wavered. He effort at training and desire to see the club do well is evident of the boys character. I would personally like to congratulate him on his deserved appointment.
The A Grade boys went down 12-0 to a strong Caboolture team. We started well. But being the first hit out for the year. Errors were always going to creep into the game. Our effort was there. Our execution was not there yet. However our defence on more than one occasion defended our line for 5-6 sets. Riley (Snow) Halpin made some incredible cover tackles to save tries and tackled his heart out. Lawrence took some strong carries to get us moving forward. Richard Murray and Steve Mitchell jnr were strong on the edges with important hitups and impactful defence. Sam Armstrong looked dangerous in sttack. Lach (Smokey) Watt was calm in his direction of the team and kicked precisely as well. Not a bad hit out first up. Across the board all players committed to the team.
On a sad note. Rhys (Chook) Fowler who has worked really hard in the preseason to get his opportunity in A Grade. Suffered a terrible leg injury. John Kaarsber, Alf and T. Rex Kampf sat with chook on the field until he was Transported to the hospital. Chook is the kid you can build a team around. Cause of his love of the game and his loyalty to his teammates. We as club will ensure we help in every way we can to facilitate chooks rehabilitation. It breaks my heart to see him injured. We will miss him on the field. But chook will still be part of our club . Love ya mate.
